Heroes Day Civic and Awards Ceremony
The National Heritage Week celebrations culminated with the Heroes Day Civic and Awards Ceremony which was held in Emancipation Square, Spanish Town on October 21, 2019.
The function was well attended by the Uniformed Groups, Community Members, Councillors and guests of the Awardees.
Cultural item and laying of floral arrangement for the seven National Heroes were done. Nine (9) persons were recognized for their significant contribution to the parish of St. Catherine in the categories of Community Development, Culture, Health, Education and Uniformed Groups.
The Awardees were: Mr. Lloyd Erskine, Mr. George Nicholas, Mr. Louis Phillips, Mr. Eric Donaldson, Mrs. Cynthia Dawkins, Mr. Everald Douglas, Mrs. Sandra Swyer-Watson, Mrs. Lesmin Smalling and Mr. Oswald McCarty.
His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Norman Scott in his greetings stated that our National Heroes have left a lasting impression on us all by their courage, bravery, and determination to stand up for what they believed in. He said that we should never forget their selfless sacrifice that allows us to enjoy democracy today.
The messages from The Most Hon. Andrew Holness, Prime Minister and Dr. Peter Phillips, Leader of the Opposition were read by Councillor Leroy Dunn and Councillor Patricia Harris respectively. Mr. Joseph Parker represented Reverend Jeffery Mckenzie, Custos Rotulorum.
The function ended on a joyous note with three (3) cheers from the Mayor which was followed by the march past and parade.
