Approval granted for new Cemetery for St. Catherine
The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) have granted approval for the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation to now conduct burials at the New Thetford Cemetery located at Church Pen, Old Harbour.
St. Catherine has been seeing a shortage of burial spaces for years, as all eight cemeteries currently operated by the Corporation are full to capacity. Therefore, the newly named Corporation has been making efforts to secure additional lands to satisfy the demand.
Chairman of the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation and Mayor of Spanish Town, Councillor Norman Scott, is elated that all efforts put in place have finally borne fruit. He made his expressions at the Corporation's Monthly General meeting on Thursday, November 10, 2016.
The new cemetery is situated on a 25-acre property and will fill the need of not only residents of Church Pen and surrounding communities but the parish of St. Catherine on a whole.
Among the amenities to enhance the development of the cemetery, a chapel will be erected, single and double tier burials, and a special area reserved for the burial of children among other services.
