Remembrance Day Ceremony and Religious Service

Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day, Armistice Day or Veterans Day is a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces specifically since the First World War. It is observed on November 11 to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. (In Jamaica, Remembrance Day is usually observed on the second Sunday in November).  

Approximately (21) Poppy Wreaths were laid by representatives from various groups and individuals at the Cenotaph, St. James Cathedral, Spanish Town, at the St. Catherine Parish Council/JCDC hosted Remembrance Day Ceremony and Religious Service held Sunday, November 08, 2015. 

The first five wreaths were laid in this order by: Rev. the Hon. Jeffery McKenzie, Custos of St. Catherine, Councillor Claude Hamilton –representing His Worship the Mayor of Spanish Town, Councillor Norman Scott, Chairman of the St. Catherine Parish Council, Acting Mayor of Portmore, Councillor Leon Thomas, representing Ms. Denise Daley, Member of Parliament, St. Catherine Eastern and Captain A.C. Lamb laid on behalf of the Jamaica Defense Force.

Seven (7) retired soldiers represented at the function, however, only two of the seven are World War 11 Veterans.

Canon Colin Reid, Pastor for the Cathedral of St. Jago Dela Vega conducted the Religious Service and Mr. Collington Powell, Principal for the Friendship Primary School gave the Short Address.

The function lasted for an hour and twenty minutes and ended with a Uniformed Group Parade and March Past.
