Heritage Week celebrations
Heritage Week celebrations commenced with a church service at the St. James Cathedral, Spanish Town on Sunday, October 8, 2017.
This was followed by a tribute to the Ancestors, a civic ceremony held on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at the Phillippo Baptist Church.
The week culminated on National Heroes Day with the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation/JCDC’s Civic and Awards Ceremony held at Emancipation Square, Spanish Town on National Heroes Day, Monday, October 16, 2017.
Cultural items and the laying of floral arrangements for the seven National Heroes were done and eleven persons were recognized and received awards for their significant contributions to the parish of St. Catherine. They were honoured in the categories of Community Development, Culture and Education.
The awardees were: Ms. Clovis Brown, Mr. Everard Chung, Mr. Jonathan Hayden, Mr. Ewart Palhie, Rev. Beverly Poinsett all in the field of community development; Mrs. Panceta Henry and Ms. Yvonne Morris, in the field of culture; Dr. Una Harrison, Ms. Dorcas Lee and Mrs. Shernette Powell in the field of education.
The messages from the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader were read by Councillors Kenisha Allen and Gary Nicholson respectively. Councillor Roogae Kirlew, who represented His Worship the Mayor, brought greetings on his behalf. Reverend Florizel Allen deputized for Reverend Jeffrey McKenzie, Custos Rotolorum.
The function ended with the Uniformed Group march past and parade
