NSIDE THE LINSTEAD TRANSPORT CENTRE
Business was seemingly slow for bus and taxi operators operating in the Linstead Transport Centre on Thursday, May 19, 2016 as several buses and taxis parked in uniformity, waiting for passengers to take to their destinations.
“Approximately one hundred and fifty (150) taxis and thirty (30) buses converge in the Linstead Transport Centre daily. It could be more; however, there is still a situation where the taxis still operate on the outside instead of inside the centre. This practice has been hampering the collection of revenue, and so the police will have to be more vigilant in enforcement and in order to have these operators comply. There was a problem of indiscipline of some small bus operators who think they must not wait their turn in the line to load, sometimes they even go in the streets to load. Again, the police have been attentive in ensuring this practice is prevented. Overall, there has been significant improvement in the centre, we just need the compliance of bus and taxi operators and the police to continue to work with us as it relates to enforcement”, said Mr. Henry Marshall, Transportation Centre Manager.
One coaster bus operator said “working inside the centre since it has been opened to the public has not been so bad afterall, the only problem is the disorderliness of the minibus operators who do not want to join the line”. Another bus operator suggested that provisions be made for separate lanes for minibuses and coaster buses instead of one lane for both.
The Transport Authority of Jamaica officially opened the Linstead Transport Centre to the public in February 2016. The operations of the centre is now legitimately under the jurisdiction of the St. Catherine Parish Council.
