Bi-Election called for Greater Portmore (North) Division’s Seat
 
Subsequent to the death of Greater Portmore (North) Division Councillor, Michael Edwards on Friday, January 6, 2017, Chairman of the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation and Mayor of Spanish Town, Councillor Norman Scott, at a Press Briefing held in his Parlour on Friday, February 17, announced that nomination day for the bi-election to replace the deceased Councillor is proposed for Friday, March 10, 2017 and election will be Monday, March 27, 2017.
 
According to the Local Governance Act 2016, (page 51, sub-section 5, (a) and (b) a by-election to supply a vacancy in any electoral division within the area of jurisdiction of a Municipal Corporation shall be held on any such day as the Chairperson of the Municipal Corporation shall direct by order published in Gazette after consultation with the Chief Electoral Officer, being the earlier of:-
 
a) a day within three months after the vacancy has been entered in the minutes of the Council;or
b) a day within three months after notice in writing of the occurrence of the vacancy  has  been given to the Chairperson of the Municipal Corporation by two persons who were entitled to vote at the last election of a Councillor for that electoral division. 

The candidates are Gary Nicholson representing the People’s National Party and Ann Marie Lewis representing the Jamaica Labour Party.
