St Catherine Parish Council in collaboration with and the Ministries of Tourism and Entertainment, Health, the South Eastern Regional Health Authority (SERHA) is spearheading a training and sensitization programme in the parish of St. Catherine.
The training is to sensitize and educate citizens on the steps to take in ridding communities and homes of the aedes aegypti mosquito that is rampantly spreading the much feared Chikungunya Virus around the island. The sessions were held at the New Life Worship Centre, De La Vega City, Spanish Town on September 24 and 25, 2014 between the hours of 10am and 2pm.
A total of (81) persons were trained and the selections were made from the (41) Parish Council Divisions where two persons from respective divisions were selected.
His Worship the Mayor of Spanish Town and Chairman of the St. Catherine Parish Council, Councillor Norman Scott in his address to the group on day-1, implored trainees to “go out there and take the task and responsibility they have been given seriously. He said they should not look at it as a task lasting for a mere two or three weeks but instead they should treat it like a full time job, looking out for the best interest of everyone and do a good job.
Mayor Scott stressed that the team bear in mind that they are representing the Council and the Ministries of Health, Tourism and Entertainment.”
The team goes out to the communities officially on Wednesday October 01, 2014.
The role and functions of the trained workers involved are but not limited to;
1. Inspection of the environment with a view of identifying the mosquito breeding sites;
2. Treatment of containers that cannot be removed from the environment;
3. The distribution of educational and informational material;
4. To prepare a daily vector survey form (Home Inspection).
