Old Harbour Bay Fishing Beach on the road to Recovery

Old Harbour Bay Fishing Beach on the road to Recovery

The St. Catherine Municipal Corporation has ultimately moved to take full control of operations of the Old Harbour Bay Fishing Beach Complex. The move is subsequent to a series of meetings held last year, with occupants of the fishing village and several stakeholders.

As a consequence, February 6, 2018 commenced collection of daily and monthly operational fees from occupiers utilizing the space(s). According to the Commercial Services Unit, collections have so far been going smoothly, and with the participation and support of occupiers it is expected to continue that way.

Councillor for the Old Harbour South Division, Lloyd Grant says he sees no reason why the improvement and growth of the complex cannot be a reality, especially if the occupiers give their full support and cooperation.  He said the fishing beach is the livelihood of a great number of Old Harbour Bay residents and they should do everything in their control to make it the cleanest and most popular fishing village in Jamaica.

The St. Catherine Municipal Corporation has so far been ensuring that garbage collection is carried out at the complex at least once per week and provisions are being made to have a garbage receptacle placed at a strategic point. Several other efforts and plans are in the pipeline.  The Roads and Works Department and Commercial Services Unit have been and will continue to administer and manage the works in progress.

The Corporation looks forward to the day when the Old Harbour Bay Fishing Beach Complex will be brought back to its former glory.
